It's The Day Before The Night Before Christmas

When I was a kid, I had a record (on the purple Diplomat label...33 rpm LP for the uninitiated) which had a song on it called "It's the Day Before the Night Before Christmas". It had a number of other Christmas songs on it, too. I used to make a point of listening to that song every year on December 23rd, and my mom would always call to wish me "Happy Day Before the Night Before Christmas", even when I was away at college and afterwards. Somewhere along the way that record was lost. And somewhere around 1998 or so my turntable sat collecting dust--a relic, a musical war horse with no one to ride it.

My sister, Patti, tracked down an LP called "Christmas is for Kids" on the Diplomat label, and lo and behold it contains "It's the Day Before the Night Before Christmas". I got to hear the song again on 12/12/2004 for the first time in many years. I'm looking forward to her fiancé Mike converting the song to an MP3 for me, as my kids would probably prefer to hear the professional singers instead of Dad singing it, as I have for them for these past few years.

About the record: I've researched the record, and it turns out that the singers were known as The Caroleers (correct spelling). Diplomat issued this LP, as a well as several others around 1970, and the records were sold at Sears & Roebuck. There was a lot of cross over of songs from one album to the next. There are many postings in newgroups and discussion threads on the Internet telling various fuzzy memories concerning favorite songs from these albums.

Happy Day Before the Night Before Christmas!

Rob,

How did your sister find this album? I'd really like to find a copy for a friend who remembers that song from her childhood.

Thanks!

Did you get this album transferred to mp3 files? I am looking for this as a "treat" for my three sisters, mom and dad as we too sing this every year at Christmas to all the family. I've searched everywhere and the only thing that I came up with on the web was your mention. We are still arguing as to whether it is referring to Christmas eve or Christmas eve eve!

I can't believe somebody else has spent countless hours scouring the web for this song! my brother and i sang this song well into our adulthood on the 23rd of december. He's gone now, and so was the song until i found this blog. now i know what album to look for in the vinyl shops

Wow! This is fantastic. I found this blog when I went looking for the words to the song. I am one of nine siblings. We always try to be the first one to call on December 23rd. We are in our 40's, 50's and 60's now and still calling on "The day before the night before Christmas". Are the words online anywhere?

Wow! I can't believe this. I was just singing the song, and decided to look it up online. We had the Christmas record years ago(70's, maybe?)
The words I remember are: "It's the day before the night before Christmas, and I'm busy, busy, busy being good. On the day before the night before Christmas. Doing all the things a young boy should: I"m making up a list about 10 pages long; I'm on page 10 now and still going strong! It's the day before the night before Christmas, and I'm busy, busy, busy being good!" I can hear it in my head like it was yesterday! I hope we can find it. My favorite was "Nobody Wants Me".

This is what I found: http://www.recordtimenow.com/christmascdspecial.htm

On this website, there are several different album song lists. The one I think I had was "Santa Claus is Coming to Town #3". They charge about $20 for the album, but they send you a cd. You can email the person also.

I looked in itunes under that title and album and artist and couldn't find it at all!
Can someone please tell me specifically how to find it there? THANK YOU! And Merry Christmas!

Did the album from your childhood also consist of the songs: The Christmas Tree That Ran Away and I want an Elephant For Christmas. When I was a child we had a Christmas album that included those songs plus The Day Before The Night Before Christmas and I have been searching for those songs for years.

My Mother in Law and I have a friendly argument every year, she calls me on the 23rd and lets me know that its the Day before the Night before Christmas and I argue with her that that would actually be the day of the 24th, the DAY before the NIGHT before Christmas. Its always fun.

I adored all the songs, "364 days of the year...", "So please Mr. Santa Clause, fill up your bag this year...", "I want an elephant for Christmas..." and "It's the day before the night before Christmas...". When my mother died, I was the only one (four kids) who remembered and wanted it, so, I got it. I had it for the longest time and transferred it for me on to a cassette, which is long gone. Now can't recall where the album is. Because I found this blog (on the eve of the day before the night before Christmas), I just asked my husband to get it on iTunes for me. I'd love to have it!

Appendum

It's 5 years after I wrote this blog entry, and I just re-read it for the first time in years...to recall what it felt like to hear these songs again for the first time in many years. I take it for granted because I can hear them anytime at all.

When I was a DJ, I always used to tell people that the most special songs are the ones you hear by chance (on the radio). Once you buy the record, the song loses some of its sheen...there isn't the rapid heartbeat that comes from a chance encounter with it on the airwaves.

I hope I haven't done that for you. But I hope you enjoy hearing these goofy little tunes just the same.

The 364 day song should be ok now, and there's a link to the album cover now.

Merry Christmas...thanks for all the comments on this blog entry--you've all brightened my day, too.

I am glad that other people share the same experiences that me and my siblings do. We call each other and sing "The Day Before, the Night Before Christmas" every year. Then we argue whether it is properly the 23rd or the 24th. Not to spawn jealousy, but I still have the LP, and a working turntable. I listen to that album every year without fail. It is great to see others who are fans of such great cheezy Christmas music.

It too used to spend hours and hours as a child listening to this album-- it had songs like "1000 santa clauses" "The North Pole Express" "I want an elephant for Christmas" etc-- I might still have the album in the basement--it's probably 35-40 years old.

~Kathleen~

P. S. Now if I can only convince my husband (who shares blood with the Grinch) to put them on his iPod so I can listen in the car at Christmas time, I'd be all set.

Well, I finally got to listen to all the songs--my husband said I could then came and sat next to me as I was playing them on my LT in the LR with the TV on and bitched that I needed headphones--which I have, but figured I didn't need them because he'd said I could listen to them. Well darn.

Today, when he was not around, I listened and listened again and was amazed I remember so many of the words! Yeah for old age!

I'm back on here though because I think there's a song missing from the album my mother had and that is I'm Getting Nothing for Christmas. Does anyone remember that song on this album? Maybe we had a different album? This one does not list on the album cover. Maybe it's just my old mind playing tricks on me?

krps I remember that song..."I ain't get nothing for christmas....Mommy and Daddy are mad...I ain't get nothing for christmas cause I ain't been nothing but bad." Is that the one? I don't think it was on this album but those words are in my head after reading your post - LOL Yea for old age!!

At 01 January, 2010 11:40, Blogger krps said...

randaso, yes, that's the song. I remembered the chorus along with several other lines (somebody snitched on me). I even found it for sale on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Im-Getting-Nothing-for-Christmas/dp/B000QO142S). It says it's by the same group, and you can listen to a clip, and it shows the album cover, different from the one that's mentioned here.

But I honestly do not remember my mother having more than one album by this group and probably more importantly, why would I remember this one song? If she was still alive, she'd be able to put her fingers on the damn album, tell me what songs were on it and be royally pissed off at me because I did not remember. There's no accounting for old age, I guess, hahahaha!
